They are very helpful for the player as they can grow their own berries and get a good supply of them to use in contests and battles. I know berries are already in the game and can get them from forage, boss drops and Pokemon drops, but they can't be planted. Sometimes, people have a hard time getting berries, so it would be easier to grow them and find them as plants like in the game.
