Many external use are cool to use once or twice such as explosion, however their usage falls of after. I suggest that as the pokemon's level increases so does the power of their external moves. Bigger explosions, deeper holes dug, etc. These would prove massively beneficial for mining and other tasks.

Most Move Skills do scale with one or more stats, effectively improving with leveling as well.
