So with the Introduction of Data packs the possibilities are almost endless.
One feature of data packs is that you can make new items by "borrowing" the ID of another item. This can be created via NBT Tags.
I've stated asked if this was possible in the datapack channel but got a negative response on that sadly.
So my suggestion is to be able to use NBT Tags for those custom items.
With that, we can create those via datapacks for usages like new Mega Stones for custom mons or mons that already exist and want to make a mega Evo for them. Can even be maybe considered with origin forms of Legendaries we want to make.
