What happened to the Pokeball models from 1.7, they are sprites now in 1.8, is this is a bug?

No. The models are still there when throwing the Poké Ball.

Cos 1.8 uses jsons to load icons it meant we couldn't keep using the model for the item in hand

supposedly forge is re-adding that functionality soon so we can make them 3d again
