This is a guide to installing Pixelmon. This guide covers the installation of Pixelmon client-side, either for use in singleplayer or for joining existing Pixelmon servers. If you are installing Pixelmon on your own server, see the server installation guide.

This guide assumes that you have already purchased and installed Minecraft. If you do not have Minecraft installed, you will need to do so before installing Pixelmon.

Installation requirements

  • A paid copy of the computer edition of Minecraft. This is the version that is obtained by purchasing Minecraft at minecraft.net using a Mojang account.
    • Only the computer edition can run Pixelmon. Minecraft Pocket Edition (including Windows 10 Edition) and console editions (Xbox, PlayStation, Wii U, Switch) cannot run Pixelmon.
    • Cracked launchers may not save your Pokémon when you quit Minecraft, or may cause other issues. This will not be fixed.
  • 2 GB of available RAM.
  • A 64-bit Java 8 version.

Notes

  • If Minecraft is currently running, quit out of it before installing anything.
  • If you are installing other mods alongside Pixelmon, check the incompatibilities list first to avoid issues.
  • It is recommended to have at least 2 GB of RAM allocated to Minecraft. Note that this requires a 64-bit operating system and a 64-bit version of Java. If you do not know how to allocate memory, see this page.
  • The Pixelmon .jar file is universal, meaning that the same file can be used on both clients and servers. A smaller server-specific file is also available, which is missing files that a server would never use. Files with "-server" in the name will not work on things that aren't servers.

Versions

Pixelmon is compatible with several versions of Minecraft, shown in the table below. Each version of Minecraft requires a different version of Pixelmon to be used. Note that only the Minecraft 1.12.2 version of Pixelmon currently receives updates; versions of Pixelmon for older versions of Minecraft will no longer receive updates or bug fixes.

There is no Pixelmon version for Minecraft version 1.11.

Minecraft version Pixelmon version
1.12.2 6.+
1.10.2 5.1.2
1.8.9 4.3.1
1.8 4.1.4
1.7.10 3.5.1
The Forge installer

Forge installation

  1. Go to this page, and find the latest build (as shown to the right).
    • Note: Recommended is currently broken -- you may get rendering crashes. Forge 2751 and up fix this.
  2. Click either "Windows Installer" (if on Windows) or "Installer" (macOS/Linux).
  3. The downloaded file is an automatic installer. Run it, select "Install client" and then click "OK".
    • Note: If you plan to use an alternative launcher, you may need to change the folder it installs to first.
  4. When the Forge installation is done, open the Minecraft launcher.
  5. Click the "Launch Options" tab on the header bar of the launcher.
  6. There should now be a Forge profile listed. Check if it's there.
    • Note: If no Forge profile shows up (or it is outdated), follow these steps first:
    1. If no Forge profile is present, click "Add new". If an older profile is present, click that instead.
    2. Find the drop-down menu labeled "Version" and select your new Forge version.
    3. Save your profile.
  7. Click any other tab, such as "News".
  8. Click the arrow to the right of the "PLAY" button.
  9. Select your new Forge profile and then click "PLAY".
  10. Check the bottom-left corner of the main menu. You should see the Forge version you installed.
  11. Close Minecraft and move on to Pixelmon installation. Minecraft should not be open while installing mods.

  2. Open the Minecraft launcher.
  3. Click the "Launch Options" tab on the header bar of the launcher.
  4. Click the profile that you installed Forge into.
  5. Find the text box labeled "Game directory", and click the green arrow to the right of it.
    • Note: You can also navigate to the shown path using a file manager (such as File Explorer or Finder).
  6. In the game directory, look for a folder named mods. Forge should have created one.
    • Note: If no mods folder is present, refresh your view (try the F5 key). If that fails, create one.
  7. Place the downloaded Pixelmon file inside the mods folder.
    • Warning: Do not extract or otherwise edit the downloaded .jar file. Copy it directly into the folder.
  8. Save your profile.
  9. Click any other tab, such as "News". Start the game.
  10. Check the "Mods" section on the main menu. If Pixelmon is listed here, it was installed correctly. Have fun!

Troubleshooting

  • If you follow the instructions above and Minecraft crashes, start by examining the crash report using this crash reading guide.
  • If Minecraft never finishes loading or is very laggy, you may need to allocate more memory for it to use. See Fixing memory issues for instructions about resolving this issue.
